GLENWOOD - A balanced attack and a solid serving game ignited Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg to a 25-18, 25-19, 25-21 non-conference win over Minnewaska on Thursday in both teams’ season openers.
No one reached double figures in kills for the visiting Fighting Saints, but each player in the seven-girl rotation got at least two kills. Tori Everson led the way with eight and Kallee Anderson followed with seven in 13 errorless attacks.
Anderson also had a match-high five ace serves, while Samantha Gjerde guided the offense with 21 assists and four Fighting Saints had 10 digs; Everson, Gjerde, Eden Norton and MiKaylie Hagen.
Emma Middendorf had 11 kills and Abby Ver Steeg hammered down another nine for Minnewaska. Taylor Amundson added 28 assists and Kaylee Glover 15 digs.
KMS is at Benson on Monday and Minnewaska has a week off until playing at Montevideo next Thursday.

In the first match of the season for both sides on Thursday, Montevideo came out on top, led by 13 kills from Abby Olson and seven from Ashley McKee.
The T-Hawks were nearly perfect serving, making only three serving errors combined.
Katie Hillerud was a perfect 21-for-21 with two ace serves, and Grace Sulflow was 15-for-16.
Alexis Schmitz added three kills, one ace serve and two ace blocks.
Alyssa Strand paced the Blackjacks with five kills.
Kaitlyn Willand was 15-for-17 serving, and had 10 set assists and 18 digs.
The T-Hawks host Minnewaska on Thursday and Dawson-Boyd hosts Ortonville on Tuesday.

Ella Johnson had 12 kills and made just three errors in 25 attempts to lead Paynesville to victory over former West Central Conference rival Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in a season-opening match on Thursday.
Johnson also had two service aces, a block and six digs.
The Bulldogs’ Sydney Riley had 22 set assists, a pair of ace serves and eight digs.
Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City’s Hannah Wilner had five kills and five service aces, and Maree Lee had 25 set assists.
Both teams play in the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Tournament on Saturday.
