SHAKOPEE - The Willmar volleyball team got a good look at top-10 volleyball at the Shakopee Tournament on Saturday.
The Cardinals lost to Eagan, ranked No. 2 in Class AAA, and to Rochester Mayo, which received votes in the latest AAA state poll.
Willmar defeated Forest Lake in pool play before losing to Mankato East.
“We didn’t start well - we really haven’t started well all season - but we played pretty well (against Mayo and Eagan),” said Cardinals head coach Traci Grussing. “We played well against Forest Lake but then we ran out of gas.”
Cami Sletta led the Cards with 22 kills in the four matches, Grace Marti finished with 13 and Catelyn Haug had nine.

Esther Grussing had 61 set assists and three blocks.
Marti had six blocks, Sletta had four and Heidi Sellman had four. Addie Erickson had 27 digs and Grussing had 21.
Willmar returns to Central Lakes Conference play against Sauk Rapids at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

MACCRAY won three pool matches, then defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in the championship match of the Montevideo Invitational on Saturday.
Carly Orwick led the Wolverines with 30 kills and 43 digs, and she also served three aces.
Emily Orwick and Ellie Thein both had 15 kills, and Olivia Ruiters had 14.
Sydney Schwitters had 80 set assists and seven kills.
Montevideo went 2-2, falling to Wabesso in the third-place match.
Abby Olson had 21 kills, four ace serves, four blocks and 22 digs.
Grace Sulflow had 30 set assists and Sarah Sulflow had 20. Kaylee Glomstad had five blocks and Alexis Schmitz had four to go along with her eight kills and six ace serves.
Paynesville won the fifth-place match over Lakeview.

The Bulldogs’ Ashley Froelich had 29 kills and Sara Shaefer had nine kills and five blocks. Sydney Riley had 62 set assists.

BROWERVILLE INVITE
Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg won five of six matches to place second at the Browerville Invitational over the weekend.
The Saints defeated Bertha-Hewitt, Browerville/Eagle Valley, West Central Area, Henning and Royalton before falling to New York Mills in the championship match.
It was the first loss of the season for KMS.

Kallee Anderson led the Saints with 43 total kills and Tori Everson was right behind with 42.
Sam Gjerde had 123 set assists, served 12 aces, and had four blocks and 42 digs.
Anderson served 10 aces and Sydney Walsh finished the tournament with six ace serves, 18 kills, six blocks and 23 digs.
The Saints improved to 10-1 overall.

SW MINNESOTA CHALLENGE
Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa went 2-3 playing some larger metro-area schools at the Southwest Minnesota Challenge on Friday and Saturday at Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall.
The Jaguars defeated New Prague and East Ridge but lost to Lakeville North, Lakeville South and East Ridge.
Ashley Trustheim had 38 kills, served two aces and had five blocks to go with 40 digs.
