Prep volleyball roundup: Paynesville Bulldogs move into Section 3AA final

Paynesville beats New London-Spicer 3-0 in the North Sub-Section championship. Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa advances to the 6A final and BOLD falls to Mayer Lutheran in 2A.

LITCHFIELD — The Paynesville volleyball team is on its way to the section championship.

The Bulldogs won the Section 3AA-North title Thursday night. They beat New London-Spicer 3-0.

The scores were 25-20, 25-19, 25-19.

Paynesville plays Jackson County Central for the Section 3AA title at 6 p.m. Saturday at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. Jackson County Central is the top seed in 3AA-South. It beat second-seeded Luverne 25-18, 25-20, 25-21 Thursday.

Against NLS, Paynesville got 20 kills and seven digs from Kyleight Tanen. Natalie Riley added nine kills and six digs. Emm Flanders had nine kills and five digs. Paynesville had an attack percentage of .216.

Aubrie Spanier contributed 39 set assists. The Bulldogs served .917 percent with seven aces. Tangen, Sophie Schreider and Flanders all had two ace serves each.

Saturday’s Section 3AA championship match winner advances to the state tournament Nov. 10-13 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Top-seeded Mayer Lutheran improved to 28-2 with the sweep of third-seeded BOLD in the Section 2A-North match at Mankato East High School.

Mayer Lutheran advances to the Section 2A championship match with a berth in the state tournament on the line.

The Crusaders play Cleveland at 6 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter High School. Cleveland, the top seed in 2A-South, beat second-seeded Cedar Mountain 25-14, 25-22, 25-8.

For BOLD, senior Abby Meyers led the way with six kills. Sophomore Ady Knake, senior Leslie Snow and senior Caylee Weber each had three kills. Sophomore Delaney Tersteeg had 13 set assists.

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa earned a berth in the Section 6A final by beating Wheaton/Herman-Norcross at Fergus Falls High School.

The Jaguars, the top seed in 6A-South, have now won seven in a row. Wheaton/H-N was the second seed.

The BBE plays Breckenridge for the Section 6A championship at 7 p.m. Saturday at Fergus Falls. Breckenridge, the top seed in 6A-North, beat second-seeded Henning, 3-2.

The Cowgirls won 17-25, 34-32, 21-25, 25-18, 15-5 in the first match Thursday at Fergus Falls.

BBE for its seventh state tournament berth since 2005. The Jaguars also went to state in ‘05, ‘07, ‘08, ‘10, ‘18 and ‘19. Last year’s state tournament was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
