WILLMAR - The host Willmar Cardinals rolled to two decisive victories Tuesday at a triangular with BOLD and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg.
The meet kicked off with BOLD forfeiting five of its first six matches with Willmar. The five forfeits led to nearly half of the Cardinals’ points as Willmar also got five pins - Lincoln Shinn at 132, Travis Deegen at 160, Colten Carlson at 170, Vaughn Johnson at 195 and heavyweight Brady Reigstad - and two major decisions from Logan Walkow at 145 and Estevan Navarro to win 68-12.
The Warriors’ points came from Ben Steffel at 182 and Manuel Garcia at 220 with a pair of pins.
The Cardinals then watched KMS topple BOLD 59-9 before they upended the Fighting Saints 42-24.
“It’s a great start. They got on the mat and were able to compete for the first time,” said Willmar co-head coach Ed Oehlers. “They (Willmar wrestlers) were looking good. It’s early in the season and they have some things to work out. But they wrestled really well against a high-powered program like KMS. We’re proud of them.”
Deegan, Carlson and Johnson also pinned their KMS opponent for Willmar and Reigstad closed out the night by outlasting KMS heavyweight Colton Kinney 4-3 in triple overtime. The Fighting Saints’ four wins came from Derek Krieger at 132, Nick Meyer at 138, Zach Carlson at 182 and Karter Van Heuveln at 220.
BOLD forfeited six weights against KMS. Notching pins in the dual were Jonathan Tostenson at 126, Wyatt Jones at 160, David Gordon at 170 for KMS and Ben Steffel at 195 for BOLD.
Willmar is at St. Cloud Tech Thursday before hosting an individual tournament on Friday starting at 4 p.m.
