Prep Wrestling: Cards crush at Classic

WILLMAR -- Playing host to the six-team Willmar Cardinal Classic on Friday, the Willmar wrestling team flexed its muscles with a first-place showing.

WILLMAR - Playing host to the six-team Willmar Cardinal Classic on Friday, the Willmar wrestling team flexed its muscles with a first-place showing.

With nine wrestlers claiming titles in their respective weight classes, the Cardinals scored 243 points, blowing out the competition in the process. Central Lakes Conference rival St. Cloud was second with 141.5, followed by Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg with 135.5.

Braeden Erickson (113 pounds), Caden Carlson (120), Jack Roehl (132), Josh Miley (138), Cael Carlson (152), Kaden Streed (182), Lincoln Shinn (195), Andrew Reigstad (220) and Charlie Farhat (285) were all champions for Willmar. The Cardinals' dominance was on full display as Caden Carlson, Shinn and Reigstad won all of their matches by pinfall. Caden had a first-place match to win, pinning Quad County's Luke Kluver in 1 minute, 20 seconds.Shinn also secured a first-place match win, sticking St. Cloud's Drew Kiffmeyer in 1:09.

Erickson had three pins and a decision, Roehl and Miley both had two pins and a technical fall, and Cael Carlson had three falls and a win by injury default. Roehl pinned St. Cloud's Aiden Orth in the championship match in 35 seconds.

KMS came away with three champions in Coy Gunderson (106), Will Magaard (126) and Jared Carlson (145). Both Gunderson and Magaard finished with a trio of pins along with a tech fall. Carlson's class had a first-place match that saw the Fighting Saint get the pin over Eden Valley-Watkins' Trevyn Ludwig in 32 seconds.

Quad County left Willmar with a pair of middleweight champions in Jack Howard (160) and Ayden Friese (170). Both had to win first-place matches in their bracket, with Howard beating Benson's Wyatt Mcgee in an 8-3 decision and Friese taking a 3-2 decision against St. Cloud's Taylor Hugg.

The Braves had two wrestlers make the finals, with Mcgee (170) and Alden Sylte (220). Mcgee lost his first-place match to Howard while Sylte was 3-1 in his weight class, with his lone loss coming to Reigstad in the final match.
