MINNETONKA - The Willmar wrestling team stormed through the Section 6AAA field and back into the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.
The Cardinals defeated Minnetonka 61-9 in the championship match to earn their fourth-straight section title. They outscored their three section opponents 192-18 and posted wins in 37 of a possible 42 matches.
The Cards will compete in the section individual tournament Friday and Saturday at Wayzata High School.
The Class AAA state team tournament is Feb. 26 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, and the Cardinals are expected to get the No. 3 seed behind Apple Valley and St. Michael-Albertville.
The individual state tournament is Feb. 27-28 at Xcel.
“We are extremely proud of our wrestlers’ performances this weekend and we’re looking forward to competing at the state tournament,” said Willmar co-head coach Ed Oehlers. “This group of young men is unique and has been a vital contribution to the tradition being built within the Wrestling program. They love the sport, and have become students of the sport.”
On Saturday, the top-seeded Cardinals dispatched Minneapolis South 72-3 in the quarterfinals and Wayzata 59-6 in the semifinals to set up the title match with No. 2-seed Minnetonka.
The outcome was not in doubt for long.
Willmar’s Israel Navarro at 106 pounds and Clay Carlson at 113 both won by technical fall, and Juan Resendez put the Cards ahead 16-0 with a pin at 120.
Lincoln Shinn won a 5-0 decision at 126 and Logan Walkow racked up the team’s third of five tech falls at 132 to give Willmar a 24-point lead before Minnetonka won its first match. In all, the Cardinals lost at just two weights.
Eight Cards were 3-0 in the tournament. Clay Carlson had two pins to go with his tech fall victory, Resendez had two pins and a major decision, and Shinn had another decision and a pin.
Walkow recorded two pins in addition to his tech fall and Estevan Navarro (145) won two matches by pin and another by major decision.
Colten Carlson (152) had two pins and a tech fall and Travis Deegan (160) took two decisions and a tech fall. Brady Reigstad also won three, with two decisions and a fall at 285.
Vaughn Johnson (182) and Augustine Hahn won two matches by pins and had their matches forfeited against Minneapolis South.
Israel Navarro won two matches – a tech fall and a major decision – at 106, and Cael Carlson wrestled at 106 against Wayzata and won by fall in 51 seconds.
Matt Hennes took one loss but won twice on a pin and a tech fall. Darius O’Neill also lost one match but won his other by pin.
