Prep Wrestling: Jakob Stageberg heads Academic All-Stars chosen by The Guillotine

The 2014 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features 31 first-team members, 30 second-team members, 30 third-team members and 31 honorable mention wrestlers.

The 2014 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features 31 first-team members, 30 second-team members, 30 third-team members and 31 honorable mention wrestlers.

Wrestlers, representing 66 teams, were submitted on nomination forms signed by a coach and school administrator verifying their current GPA (minimum of 3.0), number of season varsity matches wrestled (minimum of fifteen), season win percentage (minimum of 60 percent) and grade (junior or senior). Points were tallied according to varsity wins, state tournament placement and cumulative high school GPA.

This year’s top Academic All-State wrestler spot goes to New London-Spicer’s Jakob Stageberg. The senior capped his high school career with the Class AA 113-pound state title, a perfect 38-0 record and a 3.95 GPA.

Stageberg was a three-time state placer, finishing fifth at 113 as a junior and third at 106 as a sophomore. He ended his high school career with a record of 157-22, which included 82 pins.

Also landing on the first team from the area were Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City seniors Logan Peterson and Lucas Damm, and Minnewaska senior Ryan Stottler.

Peterson was a five-time state entrant and three-time state placer. He won the Class A 152-pound title this year, capping an impressive season record of 47-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 201-32, which included 80 pins, and his GPA is 3.5.

Damm was a two-time defending state champion at 220. Damm’s season record was 44-6 and he ended his high school career with a record of 144-46 (80 pins) and a GPA is 3.27.

Stottler was the Class A 170-pound runner-up this year and had a record of 33-2 on the season. He ended his high school career with a record of 104-64 (49 pins) and a GPA of 3.79.
