Prep Wrestling: KMS crowned champion at Willmar Invite

WILLMAR -- Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg had four wrestlers win their weight class and eight others finish second or third to win the 10-team Willmar Invite Friday.

WILLMAR - Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg had four wrestlers win their weight class and eight others finish second or third to win the 10-team Willmar Invite Friday.

Nicholas Meyer at 138, Simon Johnson at 145, Jordan Engler at 152 and Zachary Carlson at 182 were crowned champs for KMS. The four titles helped the Fighting Saints pile up 254 points, just ahead of runner-up and host Willmar, which had six champions.

KMS also won the Sauk Centre/Melrose Early Bird the day before Thanksgiving.

Cael Carlson at 106, Clay Carlson at 113, Juan Resendez at 126, Travis Deegan at 160, Colten Carlson at 170 and Vaughn Johnson at 195 all placed first for Willmar. Cael beat teammate Israel Navarro 1-0 in the championship match. Jalen Cabrera at 220 was the only other Cardinal to place in the top three.

Also winning individual titles were St. Cloud Tech’s Dallas Hooper at 120, Quad County’s Ethan Thein at 132, Holdingford’s Nathan Brinker at 220 and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove heavyweight Lane Anderson. Nine of the 14 title matches were decided by fall. Zachary Carlson notched the fastest pin at 1:09.
