ANOKA - Willmar remained unbeaten in duals over the weekend as the Class AAA No. 3-ranked Cardinals captured first place at the Anoka Duals Saturday.
Willmar opened with a convincing 64-9 win over Forest Lake. Nine Cardinals posted a fall with Juan Resendez at 120, Lincoln Shinn at 126 and Matt Hennes at 220 collecting their falls in the first period. Israel Navarro at 106, Clay Carlson at 113, Travis Deegan at 152, Colten Carlson at 160, Vaughn Johnson at 182 and Augustine Hahn at 195 also had falls.
The big win pushed Willmar into the semifinals where it upended No. 8 Prior Lake 38-23. A six-match winning streak that started with Estevan Navarro’s decision at 145 and ended with Hahn’s major decision at 195 amassed 26 points and gave Willmar some breathing room. The Cardinals led 12-11 before the streak that also featured pins from Colten Carlson at 160 and Johnson at 182, a major from Deegan at 152, and a decision from Darius O’Neill at 170.
Willmar then ended a perfect day with a 41-26 victory over No. 9 Anoka in the final. The host Tornados had a 17-12 lead six matches into the dual before Willmar won five of the next six weights to grab a 41-23 lead. Notching pins were Logan Walkow at 132, Colten Carlson at 170 and Johnson at 182. Estevan Navarro at 145 and Hahn at 195 added majors.
Colten Carlson’s three wins upped his career total to 168, surpassing his uncle Chad for first place on the school’s all-time list. Johnson also notched his 100th career win at the tournament.
The Cardinals will take a school-record 23-0 mark into Thursday’s regular-season finale at Central Lakes Conference rival Sartell.

Trey Austvold at 138 claimed a first-place finish for fourth-place New London-Spicer, which also got second-place showings from Logan Eckhoff at 160, Noah Welsh at 220 and heavyweight Brandon Knisley.
Caleb Blaisdell was 3-0 before falling in the 170-pound final for Minnewaska.
