ST. PAUL - The United drew the daunting task of going up against nine-time state champion and top-ranked Simley in the first round of the Class AA State Team Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center. The three high schools that make up the United - Dawson-Boyd, Lac qui Parle Valley and Montevideo - never made state by itself before joining forces this season and this was Simley’s 20th trip.
The Spartans wasted no time establishing their prowess Thursday as they won the first five matches and surrendered just three bonus points in a 46-12 victory. Simley later toppled defending champion Kasson-Mantorville 40-19 in the semifinals and upended Scott West 33-21 in the championship.
Simley had won five straight titles before Kasson-Mantorville beat them in last year’s final.
The United had more success in their next match - the consolation semifinals - but a rough finish allowed Totino-Grace to rally past them 36-34, eliminating the United from the tournament.
DB/LQPV/Montevideo ends its noteworthy season with a record of 27-6 in duals. But over half of its lineup will get to continue their season at the ‘X’ as eight wrestlers - seniors Jordan Bothun (120), Logan Knoshal (138), Keith Abraham (152), Mason Kwilinski (160), Joe Weeding (170) and heavyweight Jake Lehmann; and sophomores Bailey Eickhoff (126) and David Nelson (220) - qualified for the state individual tournament that is today and Saturday.
Winning both matches on the day for the United were Knoshal, Weeding and Lehmann, whose two victories came from pins and upped his win total on the season to 40.
Simley 46, United 12
A pin, major decision and three straight decisions to open the dual gave Simley a comfortable 19-0 lead. Knoshal snapped the streak for the United by shutting out Zach Spychalla 5-0 at 138, but the Spartans responded by getting two pins and another decision to up their lead to 34-3 and punch their ticket to the semifinals.
The United later got a 12-6 decision from Weeding at 170 and a pin late in the third period from Lehmann in the heavyweight match.
