Prep Wrestling: Willmar pins Sartell to remain unbeaten in CLC play

WILLMAR -- With arguably its biggest match of the regular season immediately ahead, the Willmar wrestling team made sure not to overlook Sartell Thursday night.

With seven pins and two decisions, the Cardinals earned a 49-22 win, moving them one step closer to a third-straight outright Central Lakes Conference title.

Willmar’s Brady Reigstad and Colten Carlson each made short work of their foes. Reigstad pinned Ben Strom in just 13 seconds at heavyweight while Carlson needed just 17 to dispense of Avery Startz at 160.

Others earning pinfall wins for the Cardinals were Israel Navarro at 106, Cael Carlson at 113, Lincoln Shinn at 138, Logan Walkow at 152 and Josiah Swanson at 170.

Elsewhere, Breck Erickson won a 12-4 major at 145.

In a matchup of two of the state’s top 126-pound wrestlers, third-ranked Clay Carlson of Willmar earned a 6-4 decision over No. 1 Rylee Molitor.

Now 7-0, the Cardinals can clinch the conference outright by beating 6-1 St. Cloud Tech at home tonight. A win would also secure a third-consecutive perfect season in the conference for Willmar.

The only action featuring the two teams this season went the Tigers’ way, as they took first at the 10-team Willmar Invite with a score of 197 on Dec. 4. The Cardinals placed third with 171.5 points.
