Prep Wrestling: Willmar places seventh at All Force invitational

ROCHESTER -- The Willmar wrestling team placed seventh at the prestigious, 33-team All Force Minnesota Christmas Tournament over the weekend, and five Cardinals wrestlers earned podium places.

ROCHESTER - The Willmar wrestling team placed seventh at the prestigious, 33-team All Force Minnesota Christmas Tournament over the weekend, and five Cardinals wrestlers earned podium places.
The Cardinals scored 124.5 points in their first appearance in the high-quality invitational since the 1990s. The Cardinals bested West Fargo, North Dakota’s top-ranked team, and other Minnesota powers such as Cambridge and Hastings.
Perennial Minnesota power Apple Valley won the tournament with 188 points, followed by St. Michael-Albertville, Kaukauna, Kasson-Mantorville and Jackson County Central.
Cardinal heavyweight Brady Reigstad earned a second-place finishe, defeating the No. 5- and No. 6-ranked state heavyweights before losing to NCAA Division I recruit Alex Hart, of Prior Lake, in the final.
“He had an unbelievable tournament,” said Cardinals co-coach Ed Oehlers. “He literally gets better with every match.”
Colten Carlson was 5-2 and placed fourth at 160 pounds, and Augustine Hahn won four matches and placed sixth at 195 pounds. Israel Navarro placed sixth at 106 pounds and defeated Scott West’s Parker Huss, who is ranked No. 3 in Class AA.
Travis Deegan was 4-2 and placed seventh at 152 pounds and Vaughn Johnson was also 4-2 and finished seventh at 182 pounds.
“Obviously, we are very excited about the direction the team is headed,” Oehlers said. “Our goal was to break the top 10 and we ended in seventh. But, like many others, we still have a long ways to go to get where we want to be.”

Big Bear Invite
Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta 138-pounder Travis Ostby won five of six matches and placed third at the Big Bear Invitational over the weekend in Cass Lake.
Three other MAHACA wrestlers placed to help the Tigers finish in 19th place with 73.5 points.
Two Willmar wrestlers, Cael Carlson and Matt Hennes, also competed in the tournament and helped the Cardinals place 29th with 35 points.
Cael Carlson was 5-2 and placed fifth at 106 pounds, and Hennes was 2-3, good for an eighth-place finish at 220 pounds.
MAHACA’s Matt Munsterman was 5-3 and placed sixth at 113 pounds, and Trenton Nelson was 5-2 and placed seventh at 132 pounds.
The Tigers’ Alec Gausman was 3-3 and placed eighth at heavyweight.
