Baseball roundup: Fighting Saints remain unscathed

Baseball report for Saturday, May 14, 2022, in west central Minnesota. Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg wraps up the MaxBat Classic in Elrosa with an 11-0 victory over Browerville/Eagle Valley.

ELROSA — The Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg baseball team kept its undefeated record intact after finishing the MaxBat Classic 2-0.

On Saturday at Saints Field, the Fighting Saints won in an 11-0 five-inning rout against Browerville/Eagle Valley. On Friday, KMS got a 1-0 win against Sauk Centre.

The Fighting Saints now sit at 10-0.

Isaac Rudningen led the KMS offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Jared Cortez drew a pair of walks, going 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Wylee Lottman was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.

Jaiden Henjum got the win after striking out seven over four innings.


KMS plays host to Dawson-Boyd on Monday for a Camden Conference game.

Sauk Centre 9, BBE 1

Sauk Centre put up seven runs in the top of the second inning on the way to a win over Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the final game of the MaxBat Classic in Elrosa.

Matthew Warring was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for the Mainstreeters. Elijah Fletcher hit a solo home run, going 1-for-4.

Gavin Kampsen had a pair of hits for the Jaguars, driving in a run. Chase Wright hit for a triple and scored a run in the loss.

With three runs in the bottom of the third inning, Lac qui Parle Valley got the cushion it needed to beat Camden Conference rival Yellow Medicine East in Rosen.

Games scheduled on Saturday in Madison were moved to Rosen after storm damage left the Eagles’ home field unplayable. According to head coach Bart Hill, three light poles were downed and another one is leaning and has to be removed.


Avery Wittnebel went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI for LQPV. Kadyn Fernholz was 1-for-1 with a run and an RBI. Kaiden Allpress got the win in relief, striking out six over five innings.

Nolan Hildahl was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Sting. Israel Eakes added a hit and an RBI.

Yellow Medicine East put up eight combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings to net a win against Border West in Rosen.

Drew Almich had a hot bat for the Sting, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Jake Odegard finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. On the mound, Isaac Jimenez picked up the ‘W’ after throwing 3-1/3 innings.

Tied at 8-8, Border West had a pair of runs reach home in the top of the seventh inning to secure the win over Lac qui Parle Valley in Rosen.

Juan Villarreal was 4-for-5 for the Buccaneers, driving in two runs and scoring another. Brody Nachbor, Isaac Haanen, Tucker Blume and Jake Volker each had two hits for Border West.


Landon Schirm went 1-for-4 with three runs and an RBI for the Eagles. Kadyn Fernholz added two more RBIs, going 1-for-4.

Four Minnewaska players had two hits as the Lakers picked up the non-conference win against Fergus Falls in Glenwood.

Noah Jensen was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored for Minnewaska. Torii Johnson, Dylan Alexander and Jack Majerus each were 2-for-4. Alex Panitzke got credit for the win after tossing four scoreless innings to start the game.
