Baseball roundup: Minnewaska, Montevideo earn a split

Baseball report for Thursday, May 19, 2022, in west central Minnesota. Lakers and Thunder Hawks each win one in a key West Central doubleheader

GLENWOOD — The Minnewaska and Montevideo baseball teams split a West Central Conference Thursday.

The Lakers beat the Thunder Hawks 9-4 in Game 1. Montevideo then won Game 2, 11-9.

In Game 2, Montevideo’s Gage Augeson went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Brady Snell got the pitching win. He didn’t allow an earned run in six innings, giving up four hits, striking out eight and walking no one.

For Minnewaska, Jack Larson and PJ Johnson each had two hits.

In Game 1, Alex Panitzke pitched four scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory. He struck out one and walked two, allowing no hits.

Dylan Alexander, Jack Maerjus and PJ Johnson all had two hits for the Lakers. Alexander doubled, walked and drove in two runs. Johnson drove in a run.

For Montevideo, Ethan Moravetz was 2-for-4 with a run and Grayson Eisenlohr went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI.

Minnewaska is now 10-4 in the conference and 12-5 overall. The Lakers trail Morris/Chokio-Alberta, which is 11-2 in the conference and 14-3 overalls after beating Benson 5-2 Thursday.

Montevideo is 7-6 in the WCC and 9-7 overall.

Minnewaska plays Paynesville at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Glenwood. Montevideo’s next game is also against Paynesville, at 5 p.m. Monday in Montevideo.

Drew Storck struck out nine in four innings to help Morris/Chokio-Alberta to the victory over Benson at Morris.

Storck allowed one hit and one earned run. He walked three. Drew Huebner and Dylan Rose finished up on the mound for the Tigers.

Six players had hits for Morris/CA.

Isaac Minchow was 2-for-4 with two runs for Benson.

MACCRAY 18, CMCS 1

A 10-run second inning helped propel MACCRAY past Central Minnesota Christian at Prinsburg.

Isaac Strommer and Brooks Asche led the way for the Wolverines. Strommer went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Asche was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RbI. Gavin Husman, Joe Heidecker and Xavier Noble all had two hits for MACCRAY, with Heidecker driving in five runs.

Dreyer Homan got the complete-game, five-inning win for the Wolverines. He struck out nine, walked two and allowed three hits and one earned run.

Ethan Bulthuis went 2-for-3 for CMCS.

Central Minnesota Christian, playing its second game of the day, beat Lakeview at Prinsburg.

Braelin Rime went 2-for-4 with a run and Trenton Bulthuis was 2-for-4 with two runs for the Bluejays, who scored two runs in the top of the seventh to break a 5-5 tie.

Ethan Bulthuis got the win in relief for CMCS. In 2-1/3 innings, he struck out four and walked one, allowing no hits.

Jordan Fischer went 2-for-4 with two runs for the Lakers.

Sam Nibbe’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning enabled Russell-Tyler-Ruthton to beat Lac qui Parle Valley at Ruthton.

Nibbe’s fly ball scored Brayden Apple, who had reached on a fielder’s choice and eventually wound up on third as the Knights loaded the bases.

LQPV had tied it up at 8-8 in the top of the seventh on a two-run triple by Avery Wittnebel.

Griffin Howard tossed a five-inning no-hitter for Renville County West in its victory over Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at Sacred Heart.

ACGC 7, Litchfield 3

Jack Peterson and Connor Barker homered and Logan Straumann had a big game to help Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City beat Litchfield under the lights at Kingery Field in Atwater.

Peterson hit a two-run shot in the third inning. Barker also smacked a two-run home run in the third, when the Falcons scored four runs to take a 5-0 lead.

Straumann was 3-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs.

Litchfield rallied with three runs in the sixth. But, ACGC scored two more in the bottom of the sixth.

Hunter Schultz went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI and Calvin Jones was 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base.
