Baseball roundup: New London-Spicer Wildcats earn a split with Watertown-Mayer

Baseball report for Thursday, April 27, 2023, in west central Minnesota. Wildcats beat Royals 11-6, then falls to W-M 9-2 in the nightcap

WATERTOWN — New London-Spicer and Watertown-Mayer split a Wright County Conference baseball doubleheader on Thursday.

The Wildcats scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take Game 1, 11-6.

In Game 2, the Royals used their own big inning, scoring five in the top of the sixth, for a 9-2 victory.

In the opener, NLS’ Bennett Schultz went 3-for-3 with a double, three RBis and a pair of runs scored. Then in the nightcap, Luke Knudsen led the Wildcats’ offense, finishing 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

NLS is back on the road at 4:30 p.m. Friday to play Minnewaska in a non-conference tilt.

Game 2: Litchfield 10, HLWW 4

Litchfield got its first two Wright County Conference wins after sweeping Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted at Litchfield’s Optimist Park.

In the opener, the Dragons held the Lakers to two hits. Caden Besemer was the winning pitcher, striking out six with one walk in a complete game.

Anthony Estrada paced Litchfield’s offense in Game 2, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Ashton Sullivan scored three runs in the victory.

CMCS 11, RCW 1

Central Minnesota Christian’s Ethan Bulthuis struck out 10 in a complete-game win and drove in a pair of runs in the Bluejays’ five-inning win over Renville County West at Sacred Heart.

Bulthuis was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and two stolen bases. Isaiah Swart had two hits and three RBIs for CMCS.

Evan Zimmer and Travis Engelke combined to strike out 12 Benson batters as Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg won the matchup of Swift County rivals at Sunburg.

Zimmer tossed the first four innings, striking out nine with three hits and one walk allowed. Engelke struck out the side in an inning of work.

Chase Magaard was 2-for-4 for the Fighting Saints. He drove in three runs and scored two more.
