Baseball roundup: Willmar falls in nine at Becker

Baseball report for Friday, May 20, 2022, in west central Minnesota. Bulldogs earn a 9-8 walk-off win over the Cardinals

BECKER — Needing nine innings to determine a winner, Becker finally broke through for a walkoff win.

Nolan Murphy led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, made it to second on a walk, then got to third on a wild pitch. Jase Tobako hit a sacrifice fly to send Murphy home as the Bulldogs got the 9-8 non-conference baseball win over Willmar on Friday.

Playing in their fourth game this week, Willmar put up three runs in the top of the second to build a 4-1 lead. They went up by 7-2 through six-and-a-half innings before Becker put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth. After the Cardinals scored again in the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs brought home three more runs in the bottom half to extend the game.

Sam Etterman paced Willmar’s offense, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs and a pair of stolen bases. Brandt Sunder and Alex Schramm each had two hits. Sunder was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run. Schramm scored three times and stole two bases, going 2-for-4.

Murphy was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and two steals for Becker. Brady Taylor drove in three runs, going 1-for-4 with a double.

Sergio Fernandez started the game on the mound for the Cardinals, going 6-1/3 innings in a no-decision. Taylor picked up the win for the Bulldogs after 3-2/3 innings of relief.

Ranked seventh in Class AAA in the new state polls released Friday, Willmar has two more games in the regular season. The Cardinals go to Cold Spring on Monday to face Rocori, then host Big Lake on Tuesday night.

Paynesville 14, Minnewaska 1

Fourth-ranked (Class AA) Paynesville cruised to a five-inning win over Minnewaska at Glenwood.

Eli Nelson got the win for the Bulldogs, striking out eight and holding the Lakers to three hits and one walk over four innings. Nelson also went 4-for-4 with three doubles, three runs and a pair of RBIs. Grayson Fuchs hit a three-run home run in the third, finishing 1-for-2 with three runs and three RBIs.

Jacob Blair, Torii Johnson and PJ Johnson all had hits for Minnewaska.

A four-run top of the sixth inning helped New London-Spicer handle a late rally by Morris/Chokio-Alberta to secure a non-conference win at Morris.

Gavin Degner finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the wildcats. Aedan Andresen was 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Grant Paffrath tossed all seven innings for NLS, striking out three in the victory.

Kaiden Allpress and Davis Patzer combined to hold Benson to one hit as Lac qui Parle Valley got the five-inning non-conference win in Madison.

Allpress started the game, striking out seven in four innings. Patzer threw a hitless fifth, striking out two.

Landon Schirm was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Eagles. Ethan Schommer drove in a pair of runs, finishing 1-for-2 with a double.

Isaac Strommer led the way for the Wolverines. He went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Jase Kirksen threw four shutout innings to get the win. He struck out five, walked three and allowed two hits.

Camden Anderson and Ben Bye combined on a one-hitter to lead West Central Area past BOLD at Bird Island.

Hayden Edwards went 2-for-4 with two runs as BOLD held off West Central Area for the victory at Bird Island.

West Central Area scored one in the bottom of the seventh, but Max Benson came on in relief of Tate Sheehan for the save. Benson went two-thirds of an inning, striking out two and walking one.

Wylee Lottman and Jared Cortez each had big games as Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg beat Renville County West at Sunburg.

Lottman got the pitching win in relief, tossing four scoreless innings. He struck out seven, walked one and allowed one hit. Cortez finished up, tossing the last two innings. He struck out four and did not allow a hit or walk.

At the plate, Lottman was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs and an RBI. Cortez went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI.

Griffin Howard, Tyler Froland, Tyler Amsden and Jack Wertish had hits for RCW.
