Boys basketball roundup: KMS slows down YME

Prep boys basketball report for Monday, Jan. 23, 2023, in west central Minnesota. Fighting Saints use a strong second half, and a big game from DeAndre Holloway, to beat the Sting 62-52

GRANITE FALLS — DeAndre Holloway and DJ Whitebuffalo traded buckets back and forth in hopes of gaining an edge in Monday’s Camden Conference boys basketball contest.

While Holloway put up 17 first-half points for Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. Whitebuffalo followed with 13 for Yellow Medicine East. And, Whitebuffalo’s Sting led 31-28 at halftime.

In the second half, Holloway and the rest of the KMS squad found a way to slow down Whitebuffalo and YME. The Fighting Saints got the road win, 62-52.

Holloway, a 6-foot-7 junior forward, scored a game-high 29 points. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and had three blocks. Teammate Malaki Lee followed up with 14 points and five boards. Hunter Kallstrom ripped down 14 rebounds, blocked three shots and had a pair of steals in the victory.

Lee (8) and Holloway (7) paced a Fighting Saints team that outscored YME at the free-throw line. KMS finished 20 of 32 from the stripe. YME was 6 of 10.

Held scoreless in the second half, Whitebuffalo and Archie LaRose led the Sting with 13 points each. LaRose also had six rebounds and five steals, both team highs. Bryce Sneller added 11 points and five rebounds.

The Fighting Saints are now 8-3 in the Camden. The Sting drop to 2-5.

KMS plays host to Canby at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Kerkhoven. YME plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Montevideo.

Trevor Smith pumped in 31 points to lead Tracy-Milroy-Balaton past Renville County West in Tracy.

Smith is a 6-foot sophomore guard.

Adam Schrupp had 22 points and Ryan Schrupp added 11 points for the Jaguars. Jack Wertish contributed eight points and 14 rebounds and Isaac Haen had nine points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals for RCW.

Brayson Boike and Drew Hjelmeland led Dawson-Boyd to its fifth straight victory at Canby.

Boike, a 6-foot-7 sophomore guard, notched 22 points and 10 rebounds. Hjelmeland, a 6-6 sophomore forward, had 21 points and four blocks.

Kaden Molden dropped a game-high 27 points for Lac qui Parle Valley in a Camden Conference win over host Minneota.

After snapping a seven-game win streak, the Eagles have now won two in a row.

Davis Patzer (17), Matthew Arndt (11) and TJ Mitchell (10) also finished in double figures for LQPV.

The Eagles host Yellow Medicine East at 6 p.m. Thursday in Madison.

Lakeview 62, CMCS 54

Lakeview, ranked No. 8 in Class A, used a strong second half to rally to beat Central Minnesota Christian in Cottonwood.

CMCS led 38-30 at halftime. The Lakers outscored the Bluejays 32-16 in the final 18 minutes.

Ethan Bulthuis led CMCS with 19 points and eight rebounds. Ryan Harrington had 15 points and Drew Duininck added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Bluejays.

CMCS plays host to Tracy-Milroy-Balaton at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Prinsburg.

Ryan King hit a layup with 9.2 seconds left to put BOLD up for good for a victory over Mayer Lutheran in a matchup of Section 2A teams in Mayer.

The win was the Warriors’ sixth in a row.

King was fouled on the play and missed the corresponding free throw. The Crusaders’ Mason Neitzel drew a foul, made the first free throw and missed the second. King grabbed the board to secure the victory.

King led BOLD with 23 points on 7 of 12 shooting. William Penkert followed up with 17 points. Jack Gross had 15 points, eight assists, four steals and four blocks.
