Boys basketball roundup: Sartell Sabres step up outside

WILLMAR — Sartell’s sharpshooters found their stroke in the second half.

With only two 3-pointers in the first half, the Sabres trailed Willmar 22-19 at the break in Tuesday’s Central Lakes Conference boys basketball matchup.

But after the break, the Sabres were 6 of 16 from outside, leading to a 54-50 victory at Willmar’s Red Gym.

Gavan Schulte and Anthony Mahowald both hit three 3-pointers for Sartell. Mahowald had a team-high 17 points, followed by Schulte with 12.

The biggest 3-pointers came in the final minute. With 48 seconds to go, Mahowald drilled a 3-pointer to cut Willmar’s lead to 50-49. Then with 26 seconds remaining, Dylan Simones sank his second outside shot of the game to put his team ahead 52-50. Mahowald iced the game in the final seconds with a pair of free throws.

The Cardinals were led in the first half by Sam Raitz. While building the three-point halftime lead, Raitz scored eight of his 13 points. He also had eight rebounds and four assists.

Khalid Muhumed paced Willmar with 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting.

The Cardinals drop to 1-6 in the CLC while the Sabres are now 3-3.

Willmar plays host to Sauk Rapids at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at the Big Red Gym.

Glencoe-Silver Lake outscored New London-Spicer 15-7 in overtime to earn a win at Glencoe.

Eli Ehrke scored a game-high 32 points for the Panthers. Sawyer Kaczmarek followed with 20.

Mason Delzer led the Wildcats with 18 points, who had four players score in the double-digits.

The Wildcats, who are 2-3 in the Wright County conference, play Paynesville at 7 p.m. Friday at Paynesville.

Parker Schultz led Eden Valley-Watkins with 12 points in a close call against Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City at Eden Valley.

The Eagles at one point had a 12-point lead that the Falcons cut down to two. Kyler Pickle led the way for ACGC, scoring 22 points with 10 rebounds and three assists.

ACGC is now 1-4 in the Central Minnesota. Eden Valley-Watkins is 5-0.

Jumping out to a 31-16 halftime lead, Paynesville surprised Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa for the Central Minnesota Conference win in Paynesville.

The Jaguars entered the game ranked ninth in Class A and on a seven-game win streak.

Pacing the Bulldogs was Eli Nelson with 23 points.

Kaden Pieper was the Jaguars’ top scorer with 20 points.

“Our scoring was super balanced,” Thunder Hawks head coach Derek Webb said. “I think that (the big assist total) is one of the biggest things when you play an opponent, just continue to play as a team, not trying to play hero ball. Twenty-two assists are pretty darn close to our school record.”
