Boys basketball roundup: Willmar gets handled by Hutchinson, 86-46

HUTCHINSON — The Willmar boys basketball team started a busy week by losing an 86-46 non-conference game to the Hutchinson Tigers on Monday.

It’s the fifth straight loss for the Cardinals, who play at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Brainerd, then are host to Alexandria on Friday at the Big Red Gym.

Willmar trailed 42-23 at halftime.

Khalid Muhumed and Max Mobley led the Cardinals. Muhumed had 13 points. Mobley added 11 points, going 4-for-4 from the field and 3 of 4 from the free-throw line.

Willmar shot 38.1% from the field (16 of 42), including 21.4% from 3-point range (3 of 14).

Hutchinson shot 59.3% from the field (32 of 54) and made 41.2% of its 3-pointers (7 of 17).

Kaden Butler led the Tigers with 32 points. He was 13 of 18 from the field, 72.2%, and 5 of 8 from 3-point range, 62.5%.

Melrose 65, NLS 54

Connor Engelmeyer had 15 points and six rebounds, Gor Ruey added 14 points and Devin Orbeck contributed 11 points and six rebounds as Melrose earned the victory over New London-Spicer at Melrose.

Brycen Christensen had 18 points, six rebounds and five steals and Grant Paffrath added 11 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Wildcats, who have dropped four straight games.

NLS enters the game on a three-game losing streak.

NLS plays Watertown-Mayer at 7 p.m. Tuesday at New London.

Kyler Pickle and Marcus Forsythe paced Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in a win over Yellow Medicine East at Grove City.

Pickle hit five 3-pointers, finishing with a game-high 21 points. Forsythe tacked on 20 points. Thor Goerish added 13 points in the victory.

Archie LaRose and Bryce Sneller each had 11 points to lead the Sting.

A late run by North Metro sealed a win over Community Christian School of Willmar in Christian Athletic League play at Plymouth.

The Eagles got 17 points from Jonathan Reid. Mark Arnold added 11 points. Will Chapin had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
