Boys swimming and diving: Willmar finishes 18th at state meet

Prep boys swimming and diving report for Saturday< March 5, 2022, in west central Minnesota. Cards are well behind state champion Breck/Blake, while Montevideo is tied for 26th.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Willmar boys swimming and diving team wrapped up the 2021-22 season with an 18th-place finish in the state Class A championships Saturday.

The Cardinals finished with 29 points at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, well behind first-place Breck/Blake, which scored a 495.5 to beat second-place Alexandria, which had a 203.

Montevideo, meanwhile, finished tied for 26th place with Rock Ridge of Virginia. Each had 12 points.

Willmar advanced two relay teams and 100-yard freestyler Colin O’Farrell to Saturday’s consolation finals. Montevideo advanced one relay team and backstroker Austin Dunn.

In the 100 free, O’Farrell finished 10th with a time of 48.69 seconds. O’Farrell also swam on both relay teams in consolation finals.

In the 200 free relay, Willmar was 11th. The team of Aidan O’Meara, Luke Lammers, Ethan Hurley and O’Farrell finished with a time of 1:31.00.

Willmar wound up 12th in the 400 free relay. Luke Lammers, O’Farrell, Hurley and David Lammers had a time of 3:22.73.

Montevideo’s 200 medley relay team of Dunn, Callim Schmitz, Evan Smith and Mickey Hess took 12th with a time of 1:42.06. Dunn took 15th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.36.
