REDWOOD FALLS — Luverne swept all four singles points to earn the Section 3A boys tennis team title Tuesday with a 4-3 victory over Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at Redwood Valley High School.
It sends the Cardinals to the state Class A team tournament June 7 at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
Benson/KMS earned its points by sweeping doubles play, getting victories from Tyler Hadfield and Hunter LeClair at No. 1, Matthew Thompson and Mason Bakke at No. 2 and Blake Brehmer and Alberto Vargas at No. 3.
Luverne advanced by beating Redwood Valley 5-2 in the semifinals. Benson/KMS advanced with a 5-2 victory over Yellow Medicine East.

Benson/KMS 5, YME 2
Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg eliminated Yellow Medicine East in the Section 3A semifinals at Redwood Valley High School in Redwood Falls.
The Braves won at Nos. 2 and 3 singles and swept the doubles.
The loss is the end of the line for six seniors on YME’s team.
“I’m not going to like the tennis banquet this year,” YME head coach Jeff Lalim said. “I’ve had all six since seventh and eighth grade. It’s been a long run with boys.
“We’ll be up and coming for a while, I suppose.”
The six seniors are Ean Clarke, Jackson Torgerson, Derrick Lien, Austin Canatsey, Isaac Olevson and Mason Rhode.

NLS individuals fall
New London-Spicer’s Kenneth Schmiesing won his first-round match over Crookston’s Kaleb Armstrong, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round of the Section 8A individual tournament at Minnewaska High School.

Schmiesing then fell to Ben Schreiber of Fergus Falls, 6-2, 6-1 to be eliminated.
The Wildcats’ other singles player in the tournament, Jowell Gamez, lost to Tate Riechmann 6-0, 6-0.
NLS’ doubles team of Jack Barney and Ethan Spors won its first-round match over a duo from Perham, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. Barney and Sports were then eliminated in the second round.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats’ Josh Soto and Joe Brouwer lost their first-round match.
