ALEXANDRIA — In the final match of the regular season, Willmar fell in a 7-0 sweep to Central Lakes Conference rival Alexandria on Tuesday.

At No. 3 doubles, Aaron Marthaler and Brandon Escalon-Valladares played a pair of tight sets with Alexandria’s Gabe Evink and Brennan Brecht. Needing tiebreakers in both sets, Evink and Brecht came away with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) victory.

Willmar begins play in Section 8AA-South on Wednesday. They are the fifth seed and will play fourth-seeded Big Lake at 3 p.m. at Becker. The Big Lake/Willmar winner will play top-seeded Becker at approximately 4:30 p.m.

“I’m hoping that we’re going to break through that first matchup against Big Lake, though it’s hard to tell without any common opponents,” said Willmar head coach Forrest Rice. “I hope we can push through and get through the first round.”
