WILLMAR — The Willmar boys tennis team used victories at Nos. 3 and 4 singles and at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to win the non-conference match with Lac qui Parle Valley, 4-3 on Monday.
“Today, my guys were playing a lot better tennis than they have been,” said Cardinals head coach Forrest Rice. “They were getting more consistent shots and avoided errors. And we had some guys with surprise wins, like Josh (Jensen) getting his first win, which was nice.”
Two of the three doubles matches went to three sets.
At No. 1 doubles, the Cardinals’ Jorge Zelaya-Velasquez and Andrew Ziebarth beat Levi Olson and Gavin Stutz 4-7, 6-4, 6-3.
At No. 3 doubles, Willmar’s Brandon Escalon-Valladares and Aaron Marthaler beat Garret Kostad and Gunnar Olson 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
