Cross-Country: The Minnewaska girls take second place

The Lakers' girls finish behind Wadena-Deer Creek at the Melrose Invitational. NLS took third and Litchfield finished fourth. The NLS boys were also third behind Sauk Centre and Pequot Lakes

MELROSE — The Minnewaska girls finished second behind Wadena-Deer Creek at the Melrose Invitational, which was run Tuesday at Meadowlark Golf Course.

Minnewaska, ranked 10th in the state in Class A, finished with 73 points. Wadena-Deer Creek, ranked 11th in Class A, scored 61 points. New London-Spicer took third and Litchfield was fourth.

Long Prairie-Grey Eagle's Caroline Kuehne won the girls' race in 20 minutes, 03.94 seconds. Morris/Chokio-Alberta junior Hailey Werk took second on the 5,000-meter course with a time of 20:08.29. Lauren Ankeny of Minnewaska was third with a time of 20:36.08 and Paynesville’s Madison Wendlandt took fourth in 20:53.26.

In the boys’ race, Sauk Centre won with 55 points, followed by Pequot Lakes with 85 and New London-Spicer with 94.

Brandon Kampsen won the boys’ race in 16:14.68. Minnewaska’s Maeson Tank took fourth in 17:50.08. Kampsen is ranked second in the state in Class A.

Murray County Central swept the boys’ and girls’ divisions of the Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd Invitational at Madison Golf Course.

In the boys’ race, MCC had 68 points to beat Milbank, South Dakota, which had 77, and Canby/Minneota, which had 78. LQPV/D-B was fourth with 95 points. Montevideo finished sixth with a 148.

Payton Brown of Milbank took first with a time of 17 minutes, 19.15 seconds.

In the girls’ race, MCC had 34 points, beating Milbank, which had 62, and Canby/Minneota, which scored a 63. LQPV/D-B was sixth with a 126.

The girls’ champ was MCC”s Amanda Overgaauw, who timed in at 18:01.25. Ashley Overgaauw, her sister, came in second in 19:20.72.
