Cross country roundup: NLS boys, LQPV/D-B girls take home titles from the Benson/KMS Invitational

New London-Spicer scores 48 points to edge Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd, which had 54. The LQPV/D-B girls, meanwhile, beat NLS by one point.

KERKHOVEN — The New London-Spicer boys and Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd girls emerged with victories at the Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Invitational cross-country race late Tuesday at Kerkhoven Golf Course.

The NLS boys scored 48 points to beat second-place LQPV/D-B, which had 54.

Boys individual champion was Ethan Schwankl of Lakeview, who finished the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 26 seconds. Eli Hegland of LQPV/D-B was second in 17:38. NLS’ top finisher was Isaiah Nelson, who took fourth in 18:16.

BOLD/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart’s Niko Garcia finished fifth in 18:20.

The girls’ race was decided by one point. LQPV/D-B scored 47 and NLS was second with 48.

Individual girls champion was Paynesville sophomore Madison Wendlandt, who finished in 19:53.

LQPV/D-B’s top finisher was Chloe Gloege. The eighth-grader took fifth in 21:57.

Finishing fourth was NLS sophomore Peyton Dahl, who had a time of 21:25.
