Cross country: Staples-Motley's state-ranked teams dominate

Minnewaska's state-ranked girls take third and the Lakers boys finish second at Monday's Staples-Motley Invitational. The Cardinals' girls are ranked No. 1 in Class A. The boys are ranked No. 7.

STAPLES — The Staples-Motley cross-country team swept the boys and girls divisions of the Staples-Motley Invitational on Monday.
Both teams are state-ranked.

The meet was held at the Terrace Country Club’s Vintage Golf Course.

The girls’ division included three teams in the top nine in Class A. No. 1-ranked Staples-Motley took first with 21 points. The Cardinals were led by overall champion Kiayanna Burton, who took first in 18 minutes, 40.05 seconds over the 5,000-meter course. Burton is ranked third in the state.

Placing second was Staples-Motley’s Audrey Brownell. Brownell, ranked fifth in Class A, had a time of 17:34.25.

No. 8 Wadena-Deer Creek took second with 54 points and No. 9 Minnewaska was third with 62.

Minnewaska’s top finisher was Lauryn Ankeny, who took third in 20:12.86.

In the boys’ division, No. 7 Staples-Motley took first with 22 points. Minnewaska was second with 57.

Issiah Tabatt of Staples-Motley took first place in 17:31.69. Maeson Tank of Minnewaska was fourth in 18:08.25.
