Girls basketball roundup: New London-Spicer clinches Wright County title outright

Girls basketball report for Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2022, in west central Minnesota. Wildcats beat Annandale 63-32 to win Wright County West with a 12-2 record. Next up: the Section 3AA-North playoffs.

ANNANDALE — The New London-Spicer girls basketball team wrapped up the outright West Central Conference West Division title Wednesday night.

The Wildcats beat Annandale 63-32.

NLS finishes the season 12-2 in the conference. Litchfield took second at 11-3 and Watertown-Mayer was third at 10-4. In fourth place is Annandale, which finishes 8-6.

Annandale is coached by former NLS athlete Matt Dreier, whose father is Mike Dreier, the Wildcats’ head coach.

NLS now heads to the Section 3AA-North playoffs. The second-seeded Wildcats are host to No. 7 Paynesville at 7 p.m. Saturday.

NLS beat Paynesville 68-33 on Jan. 6.

Wednesday, the Wildcats were led by Dakota Rich’s 17 points. Ellary Peterson yanked down 11 rebounds and Avery Rich had 10 points, five rebounds and four steals. Jaden Coahran contributed seven points, five assists and six steals..

Junior forward Kali Jones led Annandale with 10 points.

Maddie Thorfinnson poured in 18 points and Brooke Kolstoe had 14 points and seven rebounds in Minnewaska’s West Central Conference victory at Morris/Chokio-Alberta.

Minnewaska, the fourth seed in Section 3AA-North, plays at No. 4 West Central Area at 7 p.m. Saturday in Barrett in the first round of the playoffs.
