ST. JOSEPH — The Montevideo girls basketball team got a stern test Thursday in the Granite City Classic, holding off Crosby-Ironton 62-59 at Claire Lynch Hall.

“It was definitely one of those holding-your-breath kind of games,” Montevideo head coach Anthony Jackson said.

The Thunder Hawks’ Teagan Epema made two free throws with eight seconds left to put Montevideo up 62-59.

Crosby-Ironton then set up star guard Tori Oehrlein for the game-tying shot. Oehrlein launched a three-pointer at the top of the key over Montevideo’s Avery Koenen, the 6-foot-3 senior and North Dakota State recruit. The ball rimmed out.

“It looked good when she shot it,” Jackson said.

Oehrlein, a 5-foot-11 guard, has been offered a scholarship by the University of Minnesota, Jackson said. She finished with 25 points.

“We knew Crosby had a lot of expectations coming into the season,” Jackson said. “Tori’s one of the fastest guards in the state of Minnesota. Tall guards give us a lot of issues.

“This was a great test for us. It made us find ways to be successful and succeed.”

Koenen finished with 23 points. Tenley Epema added 12 for Montevideo, which is 6-0 and ranked fourth in the state in Class AA.
