Girls basketball roundup: Thunder Hawks respond to knock off BOLD

MONTEVIDEO — The Montevideo girls basketball team responded well after a tough loss to second-ranked New London-Spicer on Thursday by beating another state-ranked team, the BOLD Warriors.

Montevideo, ranked 11th in Class AA, beat BOLD 61-39. The Warriors are ranked No. 8 in Class A.

“I thought we did a good bouncing back,” Montevideo head coach Anthony Jackson said. The Thunder Hawks lost 65-29 Thursday at New London. “We did really nice defensively against BOLD.

“We have a lot of respect for BOLD. Their guard play especially was outstanding. They split with Sauk Centre this year, which really got our attention. They can play with a lot of (state-ranked) teams out there.”

Avery Koenen, the 6-foot-3 senior post, led the Thunder Hawks with 28 points and nine rebounds. Tenley Epema chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds.

“I thought our girls executed really well (Friday) after not doing as well (Thursday). It was frustrating the way we lost to New London the way we did. … We play (BOLD) again in a week. We’re appreciative that we got the win tonight.”

BOLD is now 7-2 in the West Central Conference. Montevideo is 7-0.

BOLD plays West Central at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Barrett. Montevideo plays Morris/Chokio-Alberta at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Morris.

New London-Spicer had 10 players score in the victory at New London. NLS ranks No. 2 in Class AA.

Dakota Rich led the Wildcats, who ranked second in Class AA, with 17 points. Avery Rich had 14 points and five steals and Jaden Coahran contributed 13 points and four steals for NLS.

Julia Houghton led Rockford with 17 points.

Harley Roering led Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa with 12 points in the Jaguars’ victory over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City at Grove City.

BBE ranks No. 6 in Class A.

Abby Berge and Tiyana Schwinghammer each scored 10 points to aid BBE. Schwinghammer also had six rebounds and two assists. Anna Jaeger contributed seven steals for the Jaguars.

Elli Roemeling and Grace Kahler led the Falcons with seven points apiece.
