Girls swimming: Cards can’t get past Spartans

Despite some strong individual performances, Willmar falls to Rocori 108-74.

WILLMAR — Despite strong efforts from juniors Cate Brogren and Aubrey Schueler, the Cardinals girls swim team remains winless after losing 108-74 to Rocori on Thursday.

Brogren started off her night strong with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, winning by over three seconds in 2 minutes, 13.68 seconds. To cap off her individual performances, she placed second in the 500 freestyle behind Rocori’s Ariana Outhwaite with a time of 5:59.45.

Taking part in two of Willmar’s relay teams, Brogren helped the 200 freestyle relay team — composed of Schueler, senior Grace Bjur and freshman Noelle Becker — to a first-place finish and the 400 freestyle relay team to a second-place finish. The 200 free relay finished in 1:49.75. The 400 free relay finished in 4:14.39.

As for Schueler, she started her night by helping the 200 medley relay team — Bjur and sophomores Aly Johnson and Amelia Tauber — finish third in 2:10.00.

Schueler went on to swim to an individual victory in the 50 freestyle and place second in the 100 butterfly.

Rocori defeated the Cardinals in a 108-74 victory.

Rounding out individual top-three finishes for Willmar were Johnson, who took second in the 100 backstroke, and Tauber, who took third in the 100 freestyle.

Cardinals junior Kylie Portiin placed second in 1-meter diving with 181.85 points.

The Cardinals return to the pool when they host Fergus Falls at 6 p.m. Thursday at Willmar High School.
