Girls tennis: Litchfield gets back to state

Dragons win the Section 6A title with wins over Osakis, Minnewaska.

ROGERS — The Litchfield girls tennis team is headed back to the state tournament.

The Dragons won the Section 6A team title Tuesday at the Rogers Tennis Club by beating Osakis 6-1 in the championship match. That came after a 7-0 victory over Minnewaska in the semifinals.

Osakis advanced by beating New London-Spicer 5-2 in the semifinals.

Against Osakis, the Dragons won every point except at No. 4 singles. One match went three sets. Amelia Benson and Emma Anderson won 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles for the Dragons over Brenna Moen and Lyndsey Middendorf.

Third doubles also had a three-set victory over Minnewaska. Benson and Anderson beat the Lakers’ Katy Vold and Avarie Uhde 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.

The state Class A team tournament is Oct. 25 at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis. Litchfield took second at last year’s state tournament.

The Dragons now focus on the Section 6A individual tournament, which gets underway Thursday and concludes Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the Rogers Tennis Club.

Osakis 5, NLS 2

The Osakis Silverstreaks upended New London-Spicer by sweeping the singles in the Section 6A team semifinals at the Rogers Tennis Club.

NLS earned victories at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. The Wildcats’ Brooke Adelman and Delaney Hanson beat Ellie George and Madeline Anderson 6-1 6-4 at No. 1. The NLS duo of Jordan Proehl and Avery Dierenfeld won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 over Madelyn Collins and Lauren Anderson.
