Girls tennis roundup: Sartell cruises past Willmar in 8AA

SARTELL — The Willmar girls tennis team fell 7-0 to Sartell in a Section 8AA match on Tuesday at Sartell Middle School.

Willmar, the 10th seed in the south sub-section, lost every point in straight sets. Sartell, the seventh seed in the south, advances to play at 9:30 a.m. Thursday against Annandale, the South’s No. 2 seed. There also is another round of play scheduled for Thursday, with all matches at the Sta Fit Fitness Center in Sartell.

Willmar, which was 0-11 in the Central Lakes Conference, finishes the season with an 0-14 dual meet record. The Cardinals still have the Section 8AA individual tournament, which begins Oct. 15 at Sta Fit.

Sartell, which went 3-8 in conference play, is 4-12 overall.

The seeds in South Sub-Section 8AA are: the No. 1 St. Cloud Crush, No. 2 Annandale, No. 3 Rocori, No. 4 Little Falls, No. 5 Foley, No. 6 Becker, No. 7 Sartell, No. 8 Sauk Rapids, No. 9 Big Lake and No. 10 Willmar.


In North Sub-Section 8AA, Bemidji got the top seed, followed by No. 2 Perham/New York Mills, No. 3 Thief River Falls, No. 4 Moorhead, No. 5 Alexandria, No. 6 Fergus Falls, No. 7 Detroit Lakes and No. 8 East Grand Forks.

The state Class AA tournament is Oct. 25-28 at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

Staples-Motley 4, Minnewaska 3

Staples-Motley swept the four singles points to edge Minnewaska in a non-conference match late Monday in Glenwood.

There were three three-set matches.

At No. 2 singles, the Cardinals’ Ronnie Noska beat Alia Randt 4-6, 6-4, 10-5. No. 3 singles, Staples-Motley’s Georgia Kruchten emerged victorious with a 6-1, 6-7 (2), 10-3 win over Olivia Daneilson.

At No. 2 doubles, the Lakers’ Grace Jensen and Zoey Elwood beat Corinne Olson and Maddison Perius 7-6 (4), 3-6, 10-7.
