Northwoods League: Loggers lash Stingers

La Crosse uses a big sixth inning to beat Willmar, 10-8, though the Stingers have a rally of their own in the bottom of the ninth.

WILLMAR — The sixth inning doomed the Willmar Stingers in their Northwoods League game with the La Crosse Loggers on Wednesday night, despite an exciting ninth-inning rally.

La Crosse scored six runs in the eighth to beat the Stingers, 10-8 before 850 fans at Bill Taunton Stadium.

The Loggers (3-6), who play in the Great Plains East Division, were led by Jack Haley, Landon Wallace, Mac Danford and Zac Rice. All had two hits apiece.

Rice is a sophomore from Fort Mitchell, Alabama, who plates for Chipola College. The center fielder was 2-for-5 with a run, a double and four RBIs.

Down 10-4, Willmar rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth.

The Loggers needed three pitchers to get out of the mess, with Trey Frahm coming on to strike out the final batter for his second save of the season. Frahm is a right-hander from the College of Southern Nevada.

Andrew Baumgart, a Willmar High School graduate and North Dakota State left-hander, took the loss, getting tagged with the loss.

The teams conclude their two-game series at 7:05 p.m. Thursday at Bill Taunton Stadium. Willmar then hits the road for Iowa on Friday to play the Waterloo Bucks at Riverfront Stadium.
