Prep girls basketball roundup: Willmar moves up CLC with road win

Willmar tops Fergus Falls 57-52 to improve to 3-2 in conference

FERGUS FALLS — Looking to gain some ground at the top of the Central Lakes Conference, the Willmar girls basketball team knocked off Fergus Falls on Thursday, 67-52.

Coming into the game, Fergus Falls was second in the CLC at 5-1 while Willmar was tied for fourth at 2-2.

“Huge win on the road tonight in Fergus,” said Cardinals head coach Dustin Carlson. “Our girls played a phenomenal team game tonight. I think we had five or six MVPs tonight.”

Sammy Christoffer and Ella Shinn each had 13 points to lead Willmar. Ellary Lange hit four 3-pointers in a 12-point effort while Kenedee Salonek and Jaida Reiman each added nine points.

Shinn and Reiman each grabbed eight rebounds for Willmar, with Shinn hauling in four on the offensive end.

For the Otters, Ellie Colebeck, a South Dakota State University commit, scored a game-high 22 points.

Willmar (8-5) is host to Brainerd at 2:45 p.m. Saturday in another CLC game.

Avery Rich had 21 points and 13 steals in New London-Spicer’s victory at Watertown-Mayer.

Rich had six steals in the first half and seven in the second. She scored 19 points in the second half when the Wildcats broke it open by out-scoring the Royals 40-20.

Dakota Rich had 14 points and five steals and Jaden Coahran had 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Watertown-Mayer had 32 turnovers.

BOLD used a 15-1 start, then hung on to beat Minnewaska at Olivia.

“Waska battled back and got it down to two in the second half,” BOLD head coach Brian Kingery said. “We responded to that well and got it back up.”

A key stat: The Warriors out-rebounded the Lakers, 46-27. Leading the way was Mari Ryberg, who had 13 rebounds to go with her 10 points.

Lainey Braulick and Abby Meyers each had 12 points for BOLD.
