GLENWOOD — The Minnewaska boys soccer team is making a late push toward a home playoff game.

With hopes of boosting its stock in the Section 8A-East standings, the Lakers used two second-half goals to secure a 3-1 win over Rocori on Monday.

Minnewaska is currently the third seed in the five-team East sub-section. Central Minnesota Christian is the No. 2 seed.

“This game was important for both of us,” said Minnewaska head coach Ted Hill. “We are 1.6 points behind CMCS (in the QRF) and CMCS lost to these guys last week (2-0 on Sept. 29).”

Down 1-0 after the Spartans’ Tayden Metzger scored in the 15th minute, Genaro Contreras tied the game up just three minutes later for the Lakers.

Contreras ended the match with a hat trick, with scores in the 42nd and 53rd minutes. Aaron Feigum had a pair of assists while Ryan Gresseth had a helper in the game’s final goal.

Hill was pleased with the Minnewaska defense’s ability to slow down Metzger.

“We wanted to contain Metzger; he’s been their leading scorer all year,” Hill said. “Our midfielders — Connor Quelle and Blake Nelson — did a good job frustrating (Metzger) and playing him off the ball.

“And our back three has been solid all year. The last six or seven games, they’re giving up just 1.1 goals per game.”

Minnewaska concludes the regular season at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Melrose when it plays the Dutchmen. Minnewaska beat Melrose 7-0 on Sept. 15.

Section seeds come out this weekend and the postseason begins Monday with pigtail games.
