MINNEAPOLIS — The goal for the Willmar boys swimming and diving team — and for everyone competing in Friday's prelims — is do well enough to compete Saturday.
That's what the Cardinals will be up to when the state Class A championships begin with preliminary competition at noon Friday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
Willmar sends six swimmers in five events to the preliminaries. Montevideo has a 200-yard medley relay team and 100 backstroker Austin Dunn also competing Friday.
All involved would like to get to the championships at noon Saturday. To do that, you need to finish in the top eight to earn a spot in the 'A' final. Finish in the top 16 and you are in the 'B' final.
It's a possibility for all West Central Tribune area swimmers.
Willmar's best crack at an 'A' final is likely in the 200 freestyle relay. The Cardinals' team of Aidan O'Meara, Luke Lammers, Ethan Hurley and Colin O'Farrell have a seeded time of 1 minute, 31.25 seconds, which got them a second-place finish at the Section 3A championships Saturday in Hutchinson.
