State swimming: Willmar, Montevideo advance swimmers to Saturday's 'B' finals

MINNEAPOLIS — The Willmar and Montevideo boys swimming and diving teams each advanced swimmers into the ‘B’ finals after the state Class A preliminaries Friday.

Willmar’s top finishes came in the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Each place 11th.

The Cardinals’ Colin O’Farrell placed 14th in the 100 freestyle to also earn a spot in Saturday’s ‘B’ final.

Montevideo’s 200 medley relay team placed 15th and the Thunder Hawks’ Austin Dunn came in 14th in the 100 backstroke to earn places in the ‘B’ finals. The top eight in each event advance to the ‘A’ finals, with nine through 16 automatically advancing to the ‘B’ finals.


Class A finals begin at noon Saturday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the University of Minnesota Campus.

The Cardinals’ 200 relay team of Aidan O’Meara, Luke Lammers, Ethan Hurley and O’Farrell finished 11th with a time of 1 minute, 31.11 seconds. That’s better than their seed time of 1:31.25. All four swimmers are seniors.

Willmar’s 400 relay team of Luke Lammers, O’Farrell, Hurley and ninth-grader David Lammers took 11th in 3:22.83. Again, the Cardinals shaved some time off their seeding time of 3:23.86.

Willmar’s 200 medley relay team placed 20th in 1:44.50. The Cardinals who swam in the race included ninth-grader Evan Wallestad and seniors O’Meara, Hurley and O’Farrell.

Luke Lammers placed 18th in the 50 free in 23.12. O’Meara was 19th in 23:18.

For Montevideo, the Thunder Hawks’ 200 medley relay team of Dunn, Callim Schmitz, Evan Smith and Mickey Hess took 15th in 1:42.99. That’s better than their seed time of 1:43.61. Dunn and Hess are sophomores. Schmitz is a senior and Smith is a junior.
