Track and field roundup: NLS Wildcats girls, Litchfield Dragons boys take home titles

NEW LONDON — The New London-Spicer girls and Litchfield boys earned first-place finishes in the Last Chance Triangular on Thursday at New London.

The Wildcats’ girls totaled 58 to beat Litchfield’s 57 and Annandale’s 31. The Dragons’ boys scored 61, followed by NLS’ 46 and Annandale’s 35.

Helping pace the NLS girls to victory were the relay teams. The 4x100-, 4x400- and 4x800-meter squads each took first place.

Individual wins for the Wildcats’ girls came from Eleanor Madsen in the 300 hurdles (50.28 seconds), Kayla Reuss in the 400 (1:04.92) and Danica Pederson in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches).

The Litchfield girls got seven individual wins. Riley Joyer ran the 100 hurdles in a personal record of 17.12 to win. Lillia Chvatal had a PR in the 100 to earn first place (12.89) and she also won the long jump (17-1). Jaelyn Baseman won the shot put (35-8) and discus (111-3).

The Litchfield boys got relay victories from the 4x200 and 4x400 teams as well as two victories from TJ Christensen. He won the shot put (54-5) and discus (158-5).

Adding wins for the Dragons’ boys were Blake Aller in the 200 (22.08), Ethan Knudsen in the 1,600 (5:21.84), August Swenson in the 3,200 (11:23.74) and Elijah Lofton in the high jump (5-8).

NLS’ Isaiah Wendlandt had a PR in the long jump at 20-2 to win. Brycen Christensen earned a PR in the 100 to win (11.54). Preston Linder ran a 17.95 in the 110 hurdles en route to a first-place finish and a PR, adding a win in the 300 hurdles (46.96).

Litchfield competes at the Section 6AA preliminaries and finals at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Orono and at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 1, back at Orono. NLS competes at the Section 8AA preliminaries/finals at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Rocori and at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Detroit Lakes.

Section 3A-North

The Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg girls and Montevideo boys had the top scores in the Section 3A-North championships at Brock Field at Benson High School.

Top-four finishers in each event advance to the Section 3A championships Thurday, June 1 at Montevideo.

With eight first-place finishes, the Braves led the girls competition with 150.5 points, followed by MACCRAY/Renville County West’s 143.5.

Gaining wins for Benson/KMS were: Ava Noble (300-meter hurdles); Carly Tolifson (200 dash, high jump); Amber Rosemier (400 dash); Kaida Helgenset (1,600 run); and Izzy Wirth (pole vault). They also took the top spots in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

The Montevideo boys picked up nine wins on the way to 185 points. Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd was second with 127.

Jacob Ochsendorf (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Francis O’Malley (shot put, discus) were two-time winners for the Thunder Hawks. Edan Smith 9200 dash), Brady Andrews (800 run) and Braden Nelson (pole vault) also won individual events. Montevideo also claimed both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
