Track and field roundup: Two Montevideo Thunder Hawks are headed to state

PIPESTONE — Montevideo will send a pair of athletes who will compete in two events in the Class A state track and field championships following the conclusion of the Section 3A championships Thursday.

For the girls, the Thunder Hawks’ Avery Koenen qualified in both the 300-meter hurdles and the triple jump. She’s the section champion in both events, with a time of 47.42 seconds in the 300 hurdles and a distance of 35 feet, 4.5 inches in the triple jump.

On the boys’ side, Montevideo’s Francis O’Malley will go to state in the throwing events after taking first place in the discus (153-6) and second in the shot put (54-10).

Morris/Chokio-Alberta’s Ethan Lebrija will also go to state in two events after winning the 200 (22.26) and taking second in the 100 (10.99).

Other area boys qualifying for state include: BOLD/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart’s Colter Johnson in the 300 hurdles (second, 42.15); Morris/CA’s Blake Bruns in the 400 (second, 53.19); Central Minnesota Christian’s Caleb Voogt in the long jump (first, 21-9.25) and Ben Van Eps in the triple jump (first, 42-6); Yellow Medicine East’s Patrick Hoernemann in the triple jump (second, 42-5); Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg’s Chade Carroll in the pole vault (second, 13-3); and Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd’s Brayson Boike in the long jump (third, 20-11, hit state standard). Morris/CA will also send its 4x200 relay and BOLD/BLHS its 4x400 relay.

Other area girls that are state bound: Morris/CA’s Olivia Lebrija in the 100 hurdles (first, 16.26), Lydia Fynboh in the 100 dash (second, 12.78), and Hailey Werk in the 1,600 (second, 5:38.90); BOLD/BLHS’ Anna Gardeen in the pole vault (second, 8-10); and YME’s Ruby Bones in the high jump (second, 5-1).

The Class A state tournament begins with prelims at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 9, followed by finals at 4 p.m. Friday, June 10. Both days will take place at St. Michael-Albertville High School in St. Michael.
