Volleyball roundup: BBE moves into sub-section final

Volleyball report for Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, in west central Minnesota. Top-seeded Jaguars take care of KMS, 25-12, 25-19, 25-18 to earn a showdown with No. 2 Brandon-Evansville

BROOTEN — Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa secured its spot in the Section 6A-South championship match with a convincing victory Friday.

Hosting fifth-seeded Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, top-seeded BBE cruised to a three-set victory, 25-12, 25-19, 25-18.

The Fightings Saints had the early edge in the first set with a 7-4 lead. The Jaguars rattled off the next eight points to go ahead 12-7. Sophomore Kylie Weller scored the last points of the stretch with three consecutive ace serves.

BBE wrapped up the first set by winning the last six points.

Ava Mueller paced the Jaguars with 19 kills along with 13 digs and three ace serves. Weller tallied 36 set assists and 12 digs, and Brooklyn Fischer added eight kills, three ace blocks and nine digs.

Maddie Luft led the Fighting Saints’ attack with seven kills. She also had 1-1/2 blocks. Olivia Noble put together 24 set assists, and Avery Joyce and Julia Carlson both had nine digs in the loss.

KMS concludes the season with a 12-17 record.

BBE (23-6) faces No. 2 seed Brandon-Evansville at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Fergus Falls. The Chargers (17-10) advanced with a win over No. 3 Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley, 25-19, 25-22, 28-26.

In the North subsection Friday, No. 1 Henning beat No. 5 New York Mills in three sets (26-24, 25-16, 25-22), and No. 3 Breckenridge knocked off No. 2 Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in three sets (25-14, 25-16, 25-15). The North sub-section championship is set for 6 p.m. Thursday at Fergus Falls.

The Section 6A championship takes place at 7 p.m.Saturday, Nov. 5 at Fergus Falls.

Section 3AA-North

Paynesville 3, ACGC 0

Top-seeded Paynesville cruised to the victory over eighth-seeded Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City at Paynesville.

Paynesville is host to Litchfield at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the 3AA-North quarterfinals.

Emma Flanders led the Bulldogs with 17 kills and Lexy Frank had seven service aces. Rayna Spanier had 38 set assists and Kaydence Roeske had 10 digs.

For ACGC, Macy Elton had six kills, Alayna Schultz added 14 set assists and six digs and Ruby Kllinger had three kills and three blocks. Mikaili Johnson added seven digs for the Falcons.

Sixth-seeded Minnewaska surprised third-seeded Eden Valley-Watkins at Eden Valley.

The Lakers’ Haley Shea had 46 set assists, four service aces, three kills and eight digs. Dreya Barsness contributed 16 kills, Dacia Fleury added 14 and Avery Fier had 11 for Minnewaska.

The Lakes play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at second-seeded New London-Spicer. NLS beat seventh-seeded Morris/Chokio-Alberta 25-22, 26-28, 25-23, 25-22.

No. 4 Litchfield prevailed over No. 5 West Central Area at Litchfield.

Olivia Holmgren led the Dragons in set assists (37) and ace serves (four) while also scooping up 18 digs. Greta Hansen had a team-high 18 kills, and Izzy Pennertz finished with 11 kills and four ace blocks.

Litchfield advances to the 3AA-North quarterfinals to play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at top-seeded Paynesville.

Seventh-seeded Montevideo surprised second-seeded Jackson County Central at Jackson.

Montevideo advances to play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Windom in the 3AA-South quarterfinals. Windom, the third seed, beat sixth-seeded Fairmont 25-15, 25-21, 25-8.

At its board of directors meeting Thursday, the MSHSL approved a switch in the number of weight classes in wrestling and voted on a proposal to seed all eight teams in football state tournaments.

Wabasso 3, RCW 1

The fourth-seeded Wabasso Rabbits beat No. 5 Renville County West at Wabasso.

Wabasso plays at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday against top-seeded Minneota in the 3A-North quarterfinals at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.

For RCW, Avery Roxberg had 12 kills and three blocks and Rachel Jakel added 10 kills and 19 digs. Johanna Braun had 46 set assists and Ellie Wulf chipped in with 22 digs for the Jaguars, who finish with a 15-12 record.

Ranked No. 2 in the Section 3A-North bracket, MACCRAY won its playoff opener in four sets over No. 7 Yellow Medicine East at Clara City.

The Wolverines take on No. 3 Canby at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the R/A Facility at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. The winner plays in the Section 3A-North championship at 7:30 p.m. Thursday back at SMSU.

The Sting finish the season 7-17.

Sixth-seeded Lac qui Parle Valley’s season came to a close in a four-set loss at third-seeded Canby.
