Wrestling roundup: Minnewaska caps off tri with win over Paynesville

Lakers start off strong on the way to a 49-24 victory

PAYNESVILLE — In the final match of the Paynesville triangular, the Minnewaska wrestling team left the gym Friday with a 49-24 victory.

The Lakers, who are in the Lean and Mean rankings in Class A, opened with a 21-0 lead. They had pins from Miles Wildman (106 pounds) and Chase Smith (120) in that stretch. Jacob Blair (145) and Myles Reichmann (152) also scored falls for Minnewaska. Easton McCrory (138) tacked on some bonus points with a major decision.

Peyton Hemmesch had a second-period fall for the Bulldogs at 182 pounds.

Paynesville travels to Wabasso on Saturday. Minnewaska will host the West Central Conference/Central Minnesota Conference tournament on Saturday, Feb. 5.

HighWater Ethanol Invite

New Ulm won the HighWater Ethanol Invitational in Lamberton with a score of 236.5 points. Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo was second with 171, followed by Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg with 170. Quad County — MACCRAY, Renville County West and Yellow Medicine East — was seventh with 96.5.

Taking first place for United were: Daniel Gunlogson (113 pounds); Zander Clausen (120); and Keaton Haas (220).

The Fighting Saints had five champions: Trey Gunderson (106); Jett Olson (145); Luke Froehlich (152); Coy Gunderson (160); and Masyn Olson (182).

United will compete in a triangular at Minneota on Thursday. KMS heads to Slayton on Friday, Feb. 4 in a meet held by Fulda/Murray County Central. Quad County goes to Wabasso on Saturday.
