Roundup: Four advance in Section 6A-South tennis playoffs

SARTELL - Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd opened up Section 6A-South tournament with a 5-2 defeat of Montevideo on Monday at the Fitness Evolution club in Sartell.

SARTELL - Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd opened up Section 6A-South tournament with a 5-2 defeat of Montevideo on Monday at the Fitness Evolution club in Sartell.

LQPV/DB entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed and swept the fifth-seeded Thunder Hawks in singles to earn the victory. Ashtyn Oie played well at No. 3 singles, defeating Marrisa Rekow 6-0, 6-0.

Anna Van Ravenswaay and Rachel West earned a victory for the Thunder Hawks at No. 1 doubles, defeating Karissa Jahn and Kamryn Siedschlag 6-0, 6-2.

LQPV/DB will now move on to the next round of the subsection tournament and take on Minnewaska.

Benson/KMS 5, Morris/CA 2

Benson/KMS swept doubles and grabbed a pair of victories in singles matches to defeat Morris/CA in the opening round of the Section 6A-South tournament Monday afternoon.

The Braves earned a spot in the tournament as the third seed thanks to an impressive 14-2 record. Their only two losses of the year came against the two teams seeded higher than them in the subsection tournament.

Sophia Curriel had one of the deciding scores on the day for the Braves, defeating Rachel Michealson 6-0, 6-0 in No. 4 singles.

Minnewaska 7, MACCRAY 0

Minnewaska proved why its the top seed in the Section 6A-South tournament Monday morning with a shutout of MACCRAY in Sartell.

The Lakers posted 6-0, 6-0 scores in four matches and the closest match came in No. 1 doubles where Greta Reichmann and Anna Vold defeated Heather Marcus and Jessica Wellnitz 6-4, 6-1.

The second round will match the Lakers up with Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd.

YME ran into a buzzsaw on Monday and was shutout by Osakis.

Osakis limited the Sting to only two set matches in the win.
The two-seed Silverstreaks will take on No. 3 Benson/KMS in the next round of the Section 6A-South tournament.

Sauk Rapids Tournament

SAUK RAPIDS - Morris/Chokio-Alberta dominated in pool play and battled in a round robin-style championship bracket to win the championship at the Sauk Rapids-Rice tournament over the weekend.

The Tigers, recently ranked No. 5 in Class AA, won all four of their matches on the weekend, defeating Cloquet and Becker in two sets during pool play. Morris/CA battled with hosts Sauk Rapids-Rice in their first championship bracket match which featured a 23-21 tie breaking set victory and also downed Albany in three sets to secure the championship.

"We faced some good competition in the championship bracket," Morris/CA coach Kristi Fehr said. "It was a fun weekend."

Tiger hitter Brooke Gillespie was also having fun, leading the team with 45 kills and five service aces over the course of the tournament. She also added three solo blocks and 37 digs on the defensive side.

The Tigers have three more regular season matches and the closest is a road match against Minnewaska on Tuesday.
