PAYNESVILLE-The Willmar VFW I team geared up for the District 5 playoffs in a manner that has become routine the last month.

District 7 Final Four

One of the oldest adages in sports is that defense wins championships.

If BOLD finds a way to win the District 7 American Legion Baseball Final Four, it will prove that isn't a hard-and-fast rule.

Ben Steffel and Brecken Ebnet had a combined seven hits and five runs, and the Mudhens overcame 10 errors to edge Tri-Town 10-9 in an elimination game Friday.

After jumping out to an 8-1 lead, BOLD looked to have things wrapped up as it went into the bottom of the seventh with a 10-5 advantage.

But after pulling within one, the Black Sox put the tying run on third, after Colton Minnick singled and advanced on two errors.

But Steffel, who had 10 strikeouts on the mound to go with his four hits and two runs scored, escaped the jam by forcing Payton Kinzler to ground out to second.

The Mudhens move on to today's championship round, where they must beat Glenwood/Lowry twice. G/L beat BOLD 5-3 in the opening round of the double-elimination tournament Tuesday.

The first game begins at 11 a.m. in Montevideo. If necessary, the second will begin at approximately 1 p.m.
