16-U soccer falls game short

The Willmar Soccer Association 16-U team fell just short of a state tournament championship berth, playing a scoreless tie with Chippewa Falls in the state Competition Level 2 semifinals on Thursday in Coon Rapids.

According to pool play rules, Willmar entered the game one point behind Chippewa Falls and needed to win to advance to Saturday's title game in Shakopee.

"We played pretty well," said head coach Richard Courtney. "We outplayed them and they kind of sat on it."

Willmar narrowly missed converting on several scoring chances, Courtney said. Sergio Moreno had a first-half shot hit the crossbar. The shot dropped down but didn't cross the goal line, Courtney said.

Willmar finished 11-0-3 and allowed just three goals.
