ST. CLOUD-The St. Cloud Rox pieced together runs in six of eight innings and held off a late Willmar rally to down the Stingers 8-5 in a Northwoods League game on Tuesday at Dick Putz Field.

The Rox sent Willmar to its second-straight loss after the Stingers opened the NWL second half with four wins in five games.

Willmar returns home to play the Rox at 7:05 p.m. today at Bill Taunton Stadium. The Rox will start Dan Metzdorf against the Stingers' Jayce Vancena.

Metzdorf is 1-1 with a 4.50 earned-run average in three appearances and two starts. Vancena is 4-1 with a 5.40 ERA in eight games. He's made three starts.

On Tuesday, Willmar opened the scoring when Quincy McAfee led off with a single, advance on a St. Cloud error and scored on Greg Lambert's sacrifice fly.

But the Rox answered with single runs in the first, second, third and fifth innings, and they bumped the lead to 6-1 with two runs in the sixth.

Stingers starter Jonny Ortiz had a rough night, allowing 11 innings and six runs-two were unearned-in six innings. He did strike out seven.

The Stingers mounted a rally in the eighth when Lambert singled, Danny Mayer walked and Eddie Estrada singled to load the bases. Justin Toerner drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Mayer scored a second run on a wild pitch and Luke Becker doubled in a run to make it 6-4.

But St. Cloud answered with two runs off Stingers reliever Kiko Garcia in the bottom of the eighth to push the margin back to four runs.

In the ninth, Willmar' Dylan Woods led off with single but was erased on a Rox double play. Danny Pardo hit a solo home run but Lambert flew out to end the game.

Pardo, Lambert and McAfee all had three hits and Estrada, Woods, Becker and Kole Cottam had the Stingers' other base hits.
