MONTEVIDEO -- Dam safety and the environmental and recreational benefits associated with removing aged dams along Minnesota's waterways will be the featured topic when Clean Up the River Environment holds its annual meeting.
The 18th annual gathering will be held from 5-10 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20 in the Hollywood Theater in downtown Montevideo.
Chris Domeier, with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources fisheries staff in Ortonville, will offer a look at the dams in the Upper Minnesota River basin and outline the efforts to remove dams around the state to address safety and environmental concerns. The subject is timely, as the aged dam in Dawson on the Lac qui Parle River was recently removed. Xcel Energy is also considering the possibility of removing the Minnesota Falls dam downstream from Granite Falls.
Domeier also worked on the removing the dam on the Pomme de Terre River in Appleton.
The annual meeting also features a local foods meal, musical entertainment and the presentation of awards.
