ALEXANDRIA — A team down two goals on the road usually is fortunate to come away with a hard-fought win. Rarely do teams pull of what the Willmar boys soccer team did on Tuesday.
Alexandria scored twice in the first eight minutes but that was that. Willmar scored seven-straight goals—six in the first half—to win 7-2 at Alexandria High School.
"It was nice to see the bounce-back," said Willmar head coach Jeff Winter. "I was a little worried when we got down 2-0. It could have gotten away from us, but (the players) did a great job to not let that happen. I didn't have any words of inspiration. They did it on the field."
Carlos Robles got the Cardinals a goal back in the 12th minute, then Cesar Leiva scored twice in five minutes to give Willmar the lead.
"Once we scored, you could see our confidence change," Winter said.
Robles then sandwiched two goals around a Maslah Farah goal to make it 6-2 at halftime. Kelvin Gomez-Padilla assisted on three of the goals.
"It was inspired play from Kelvin," Winter said. "He does a great job getting people involved. He runs the show. He's in charge."
Farah capped the scoring with a second-half goal in the 60th minute. Willmar goalie Zach Courtney made seven saves. Alexandria's Zach Wosepka made 12 saves and Winter said some were good ones.
"We could have scored a few more goals," Winter said.
Willmar is back in action at 5 p.m. Thursday against St. Cloud Tech at the Kennedy School field.
