SAUK RAPIDS — The concern for the Willmar boys soccer team was not taking an improving Sauk Rapids program too lightly.
It didn’t happen.
Willmar beat Sauk Rapids 11-2 to improve to 3-0 Tuesday at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School.
“My worry coming in is probably how we fared against them the last couple years,” Willmar head coach Jeff Winter said. “We’ve beaten them soundly the last couple years, but they’ve been improving and it’s gotten closer.”
Idd Ali opened the scoring three minutes into the game to get the Cardinals off to a good start. The sophomore midfielder wound up with 2 goals and one assist.
The offensive leader was senior midfielder Abdullahi Mohamud, who wound up with three goals and three assists.
Winter cited the play of Roger Benavides. The center back came in off the bench and played superbly, the coach said.
“I think tonight we showed our depth,” Winter said. “We played a lot of guys.
“We had some JV guys playing and they played well.”
Willmar is host to Southwest Minnesota Christian of Edgerton at 5 p.m. Thursday at Hodapp Field.
