WILLMAR — The Willmar Cardinals girls soccer team braved the rain to clinch a 6-0 victory over Rocori on Monday at Hodapp Field.
The Cardinals’ offense was active throughout the match, which featured on-and-off, hard-pelting rain drops. Willmar scored two goals in the first half and four in the second half.
“It went really well. I think we had the opportunity to progress our offense in this game and we did just that,” Cardinals’ coach Amanda Broman said. “They were fired up and made some offense happen and got into scoring positions.”
Ellary Lange and Sam Christoffer were strong contributors in the victory. Lange finished with three goals and two assists, Christoffer with two goals and an assist.
The wet conditions made it difficult for the players to gain traction at Hodapp Field. However, when the rain would subside, the Cardinals showed off their good ball-handling and passing abilities.
The Lange-Christoffer duo was highly present in the first half. Lange scored her first goal in the 15th minute on an assist by Christoffer, Lange went on to assist Christoffer leading into halftime.
Lange again scored the first goal of the half on a corner kick in the 44th minute of play and completed the hat trick with an unassisted goal in the 54th minute.
In the 60th minute, Cardinals’ Fauzia Ibrahim managed to reach the back of the net to score her first goal of the season, with an assist by Lange, extending the lead to five.
Minutes later, Christoffer would get the ball from the Willmar keeper, Ella Swensen, charge the ball down field and successfully score the team’s final goal.
Broman credited Swensen for her solid goalkeeping efforts.
“It’s always a little tricky, the ball bounces a little more in the rain. We’re just really proud of (Swensen) and her ability to be flexible and manage to secure the slippery ball,” she said.
Willmar now looks to continue its success in its upcoming matchup against Alexandria at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Hodapp Field.
“I think Tuesday is going to be a big game for us,” Broman said. “It’s kind of a rivalry for us so we’re hoping that we can continue this offensive stride, continue that defensive efficiency, and maybe have some better weather.”
