WILLMAR — The Willmar Cardinals withstood the closing offensive threat of St. Cloud Tech to take a 4-3 boys soccer victory over its rivals on Tuesday at Hodapp Field.

In a game that featured some aggressive play, including tugging, aggressive tackles and strong defense, both teams scored once in the first half before five goals were scored in the second half.

Senior Jemil Osman scored twice with one assist for the Cardinals. Teammate Abdullahi Mohamud finished with two assists and one goal.

Willmar lost to St. Cloud Tech 1-0 last season in its final game of the regular season.

“Tech always gives us a good game; it’s a good rivalry that we’ve got going,” Cardinals’ coach Jeff Winter said. “It always seems to end in a one-two goal game, defeating us last year on a late goal that was a fluke … This year, I thought we had their number.”

Aside from both teams locking down on defense, a minor wind continually pushed to the north east making the ball soar near the benches, and twice over the fence and into the street.

Osman scored the first goal of the game in the 30th minute before the Tigers answered in the 38th minute.

Osman scored his second goal in the 43rd minute to re-take the lead followed by the Cardinals scoring on a 2-on-1 in the 53rd minute with Hido Martinez Coto scoring on a pass by Mohamud.

In the closing minutes the rivalry became present with some chippiness and aggressive play.

Willmar was prepared for that leading into Tuesday’s match.

“On Saturday we had a very physical and cheap game and our guys were letting the other team get under their skin,” Winter said. “After the game we had a discussion about it on Saturday and again in practice yesterday because we knew this was a rivalry game and the big thing was to stay calm. They did that.”

The Tigers’ defense did its best to not allow Mohmaud to score, but the senior managed to fire a dagger at the goal which connected loudly with the pole in the back of the net for a goal.

Tech made it a game in the closing minutes by scoring in the 74th and 78th minutes with a chance to score in the final minute. But the Tigers were unable to get a good shot on net.

Willmar next battles Fergus Falls at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
